Larimer County Tree Farmer Tour of
Morgan Timber Products – 5/17/08
So what do you do with your beetle infested wood or the trees that you’ve cut to reduce the fuel load in your forest? We visited one business that creates more than a dozen products from Lodgepole Pine, much of it beetle infested.
Recently Larimer County Tree Farmers were invited to tour Morgan Timber Products. This vertically integrated business takes the wood it cuts from thinning jobs, turns it into a variety of products from paneling to fence to mulch, and sells these products from its own retail yard in LaPorte.
Larimer County Tree Farmers usually invite an expert in a forestry-related field to speak at their meetings. The experts are chosen based on whichever topics Tree Farmers have most recently expressed an interest, so the information received is always timely. But as informative as these meetings are we all look forward to those meetings that are combined with tours of properties and businesses. The tour of Morgan Timber Products was particularly rewarding.
Mark and Karen Morgan have built a family owned business that has solved the problem of finding a market for locally grown wood. They have created their own market by producing quality products that local customers need and want. In addition, Mark has gone out of his way over the years to share his knowledge of local forestry with other private forest landowners.
Morgan Timber Products usually handles those big jobs where their extensive assortment of industrial equipment can be used most efficiently. However, Mark is always ready to discuss projects where groups of neighboring landowners are willing to combine their individual projects into a larger job that requires the type of mechanization that he can supply.
Although this business supplies most of the raw material that they need in house, Mark, at present, is willing to buy some specific product from those of us doing fuels reduction or removing beetle infested trees. If you can supply fence rails with the following dimensions, you should call Morgan Timber Products to get the latest pricing.
Rails must be: 8’3” long x 3 ¾” in diameter (honest measure inside the bark) up to about 5 ½” in diameter and very straight.
